Basic Laser Safety

Category: Safety and Risk Services Department: SRS - Environmental Health and Safety
Description:

This half-hour online course is designed to provide awareness of the fundamentals of Class 3B (moderate) and 4 (high-power) lasers or laser systems. The content in this course is designed to comply with the intent of the applicable ANSI regulatory requirements. Learner objectives include what a laser is and how a laser works, types and classes of lasers, non-beam laser hazards, biological effects of a laser on the human body, and identification of control measures.

Basic Radiation Safety

Category: Safety and Risk Services Department: SRS - Environmental Health and Safety
Description:

This three hour class will provide a basic understanding of radiation safety principles and practices, and explain required procedures for all users of radiation at the University. The class is tailored to persons who will work with radioactive materials, or who frequent areas where sources of ionizing radiation exist. This course is required initial training for all radiation workers. Classes are available during the first month of every academic quarter (October, January, April, and July).

Course participants are provided a detailed Powerpoint tutorial after registering to a class. A thirty minute exam on this material is presented at the beginning of the class, with a minimum passing score of 70%. Notes may be used on the exam. The remainder of the class is dedicated to presentation from the Radiation Safety office, Q&A, and hands-on practice with radiation sources and instrumentation.

Refresher training is provided on-line as a separate course offering, and is required every three years after initial training. Additionally, all University-specific procedures and requirements are available for reference within the Radiation Safety Manual.

Biosafety Level 2 Training

Category: Safety and Risk Services Department: SRS - Environmental Health and Safety
Description:

This course is recommended for lab members working in Biosafety Level 2 environments, including those handling human cell lines. Topics include standard microbiological practices, use of a biosafety cabinet, waste disposal, emergency and exposure procedures, lab safety & security, and shipping considerations.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Category: Safety and Risk Services Department: SRS - Environmental Health and Safety
Description:

This training is required for all UO employees with a risk of exposure to human blood or bodily fluids in the course of their jobs.  A more complete list of applicable employees can be found in the Exposure Determination table of the UO Exposure Control Plan.  This training must be provided to employees within 10 working days of job assignment and at least annually thereafter.  (Applicable regulations: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 and OAR 437, Division 2, Subdivision Z.)

Prerequisite:

The individual will be offered Hepatitis B vaccination at no cost, as required by law.  If the employee accepts vaccination, a departmental index number must be provided.  The total cost of the vaccine series is approximately $165 at the University Health Center.

Electrical Safety for Non-Electricians

Many employees are exposed to electrical hazards as a course of their employment.  This course is designed for non-electricians to understand the hazards of working with and around electricity and what steps they can take to prevent electrical injuries.

Fall Protection

Category: Safety and Risk Services Department: SRS - Environmental Health and Safety
Description:

This class is designed for UO employees with job duties that require working on unguarded elevated surfaces.

Subject matter is for those described in the above paragraph and covers Fall Protection purpose, basic types, differences between Personal Fall Arrest vs. Fall Restraint, height requirements, anchor points, body harness, connectors, rescue necessities, etc.

This class is for both first-time employees and for others' refresher retraining.  Those attending the class are asked to bring their fall protection equipment (full body harness, lanyard, etc.) to the class for reviewing proper usage.  Information handouts are given to attendees.

Estimated class length: 1.5 hours

Prerequisite:

Generally, these employees have been identified by their Supervisors.  Supervisor approval required to attend the training. 

Additional Information:

This training is not a substitute for job specific training within the employee's department.

NOTE:  Working from portable ladders at or above 10 feet does not require this kind of Fall Protection.  There are other safety requirements under Ladder Safety to help reduce falls from ladders.  Inquire regarding Ladder Safety training from the UO Department of Environmental Health and Safety.

Line of Fire

Description:

Hazardous energy is all around us and takes many forms in our daily lives.  If you move into the path of hazardous energy, you could be injured.  These types of injuries are known as Line-of-Fire injuries.  Line-of-fire injuries are one of the most common ways to be injured from using a tool to injure a hand, dropping something on a foot or being caught on entangled on equipment.  This course is designed to help you understand the different types of line-of-fire injuries, methods to recognize line-of-fire hazards and prevention methods to take to keep you from injury.

Radiation Safety Refresher

Description:

Refresher training is required for radiation workers and authorized users every three years. Course content is presented on-line using a Skillsoft package. Completion is tracked electronically and tied to a user's DuckID identification.

Procedures and requirements specific to the University of Oregon must also be reviewed, and are found in the Radiation Safety Manual.

Respirator Training

Category: Safety and Risk Services Department: SRS - Environmental Health and Safety
Description:

The purpose of this training is to improve the level of protection provided to employees who use respirators to protect themselves from respiratory hazards.  Respirators will be used in situations where engineering and administrative controls cannot be feasibly implemented and in some cases where an employee chooses to use a respirator even when one is not required.  Additionally, this training will ensure that the University is in compliance with Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OR-OSHA) rule 1910.139 for employee respiratory protection.

The length of the class is 90 minutes.  This includes a 20 minute video, medical questionnaire, quiz and fit test.

Prerequisite:

A clean-shaven face is required for this course.

Faculty and staff are required to have an index number prior to purchase of equipment. Students are required to bring a check to pay for their equipment.  Total cost of mask and cartridge range from $25.00-$45.00.
